Crescent Moon in Evening Sky - 1951, Monotype.

Unique. Signed and dated in the plate, lower left.

Image size 11 5/8 x 18 inches (295 x 457 mm); sheet size 12 x 18 inches (378 x 457 mm).

A fine, richly inked, painterly impression, with fresh colors, on heavy cream wove Japan paper; the full sheet, trimmed by the artist, to, or just outside the image area. In excellent condition; the oil based paints naturally toning the margins.

Avery has applied complimentary pastel color within the light areas of the composition, orange rose in the sky and sea green in the water, to resonate with the darker oil base colors and so charge the work with energy and mystery. Spontaneous and elemental, this signature work supports the ongoing revaluation of the artist as one of American art’s great modernist innovators.

$28,000.
